Introduction to French cheeses

Sniff out France’s Best
France is known as the cheese ‘capital’ of the world, but have you ever wondered how many cheeses are produced here?

We’ve asked our cheese buffs to track down each and every one and so far, have found there to be over 1,000 different cheeses! This is the largest ever number reported to have been found in any country and all can be found on our guide below.

So, why not take a ‘trip’ around the cheeses of France where you’ll discover that there’s more to France than Brie and Camembert. There are nutty hard cheeses, soft creamy cheeses and cheeses made from goat’s and ewe’s milk too.

You can search for cheese by milk type, regionality, strength of flavour or by cheese group. Or simply click on the A-Z cheese by name. You’ll find tasting notes, what’s in season and tips on accompaniments and recipes for sharing with friends.

If you’ve discovered a new cheese whilst on holiday in France and want to find out where you can buy it when you return home, check out the ‘where to buy’ guide. Many of the cheeses can be found in your local supermarket, others are stocked by specialist cheese shops and we’ve made it easy to track down your favourite wherever you are.

So, keep your eyes and ears open and if you come across a cheese that our buffs haven’t found, or would like to recommend a shop where you can buy it, then contact us and we’ll add it to our ever growing list of over 1,000 cheeses.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Pouligny Saint-Pierre AOC

  General information:
Origin: Centre
Cheese group: Goat cheeses
Milk type: Goat's milk
Season: April to October

More

Description:

With a characteristic cone shape, this goat cheese has the nickname, pyramid or Eiffel tower. The home of Pouligny Saint-Pierre is the Vallée de la Brenne in the county Centre. This area has the advantage of a good micro climate, providing mild winters, with influence from the ocean. The special flora of this area, with its cherry trees and heather, provide rich food for the local goats to graze on. This richness is evident in the cheese. It has a smooth goat's milk taste, a bit sour, and a nutty aroma.
